One of the most common reasons we get called out for emergency repairs is because homeowners treated their septic system like a city sewer line. Septic systems rely on natural bacteria to break down solids. If you flush things that don't break down, or things that kill that bacteria, you are asking for trouble.

The "Never Flush" List

Even if the box says "flushable," take it with a grain of salt. Here are items you should strictly keep out of your toilet:

  • "Flushable" Wipes: These are the #1 enemy of septic tanks. They do not dissolve like toilet paper. They clump together and clog pipes.
  • Feminine Hygiene Products: Tampons and pads expand when wet and are designed not to break down.
  • Paper Towels & Tissues: These are made of stronger fibers than toilet paper and take much longer to decompose.
  • Grease & Oil: Pouring cooking grease down the sink solidifies in the tank and blocks the inlet pipes.
  • Harsh Chemicals: Bleach, paint thinner, and excessive amounts of drain cleaner kill the good bacteria your tank needs to work.

What IS Safe?

Use septic-safe toilet paper (look for the label). It dissolves quickly in water. For cleaning, opt for biodegradable, phosphate-free cleaners. Vinegar and baking soda are excellent, septic-safe natural cleaners for toilets and sinks.

Treat your septic system with care, and it will last you for decades.
